The R170 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class range of compact luxury roadsters produced by Mercedes-Benz between 1996 and 2004 and included the 200, 200 Kompressor, 230 Kompressor, 320, and 32 AMG.
SLK stands for the company's design mission to create a sportlich (sporty), leicht (light) and kurz (compact) roadster, and is based on a shortened platform of the W202 Mercedes C-Class. It was replaced by the Mercedes R171 SLK in 2004. Jump to Manuals
Mercedes R170 History
Development and launch of the R170 Mercedes SLK was based on the SLK I Concept and SLK II Concept, which are two-seater roadster concept cars that featured a folding metal electro-hydraulic roof, dubbed 'vario-roof' by Mercedes, that took 25 seconds to operate. A German design patent was filed on 30 September 1993, with the final production version of the SLK introduced at the Turin Motor Show on 22 April 1996.
The R170 SLK is based on the W202 C-Class platform, sharing many drivetrain and chassis components, as well as using a shortened version of the floor pan. The wheelbase is also identical to the wheelbase of the 190SL and 300SL, at 2,400 mm (94 in). The platform of the R170 Mercedes SLK is also used by the Chrysler Crossfire, which shares 80% of its components with the car.
Standard equipment includes power seats, power windows, power steering, dual-zone climate control, dimmable interior mirror, and alloy wheels. Safety features include front and side driver and passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control. Models could also be optioned with the AMG body design package, that features body colour side skirts, chromed tailpipes, and 17-inch AMG alloy wheels. Wider wheels were also available on SLK 230 Kompressor models.

Mercedes Benz (R170) Models Production
SLK 200, SLK 200 Kompressor, The SLK 200 was exported and sold exclusively to Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey, and Greece, and was only available with the Getrag five-speed manual transmission in most countries.

SLK 230 Kompressor, The SLK 230 with the M111.973 engine began production in July 1996
SLK 320, The SLK 320 was also introduced in 2000 sporting the M112 engine beefing up the horse power once again.
SLK 32 AMG version, The SLK 32 AMG was introduced in 2001, designed to rival the BMW M Roadster and Porsche Boxster S. The car featured the same M112 engine as in the SLK 320, but has a helical twin-screw supercharger and water-to-air intercooler. The SLK 32 AMG introduced Mercedes' new ‘SpeedShift' 5G-Tronic (automatic) transmission, that allow for manual shifting of the gears, and faster automatic downshifts before overtaking. There was no manual transmission option available for the SLK 32 AMG. The SLK 32 AMG also featured a more angular steering wheel, AMG instrument dials, an updated front and rear bumper with larger air intakes, and larger brakes; from 300 mm (12 in), upgraded to 334 mm (13 in) in diameter. SLK 32 production started from January 2001, to March 2004. A total of 4,333 were produced; 979 were sold in Germany, 2,056 were imported to the US, and 263 to the UK.

Mercedes' attractive SLK roadster appeared in 1996 as a competitor to cars like the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z3. This convertible with a folding steel retractable hardtop married Sacco styling to the existing W202 C-Class platform to create a less expensive alternative to the SL series convertibles, and as such is seen as sort of like a spiritual successor to the 190SL of four decades earlier.
Initially offered with a range of engines that included 2.0-liter supercharged and normally aspirated inline fours, the US debut saw a supercharged and intercooled 2.3-liter, 192-hp engine from the beginning of the 1998 model year. A 5-speed manual transmission was standard but a 5-speed automatic being optional for all engine choices.
E55 Amg Kompressor
The SLK was a runaway hit upon its introduction with favorable in-period reviews from journalists as well as several top-10 and car of the year accolades that initially resulted in Mercedes having difficulty meeting demand for their new roadster. The SLK line was expanded in 2000 with the addition of the SLK 320, sporting a 3.2-liter, 215-hp V-6. A mid-cycle update for the 2001 model year not only included a mildly facelifted interior and exterior but also saw the introduction of an improved ESP stability control system as well as a sixth gear for the manual transmission. The inevitable AMG variant appeared in 2001 with a 349-hp, supercharged version of the 3.2-liter V-6 along with suspension, brake and wheel upgrades.

Time has shown these cars to be mostly trouble free as long as scheduled maintenance is consistently attended to and they remain a relatively inexpensive and thoroughly entertaining avenue into Mercedes roadster ownership.
